The parasol that holds the trade winds,
and the one that does not

On our islands, a parasol is not chosen on its canopy. It is chosen on its wind-resistance class, on its ballast and on the availability of its spare parts. The rest is decoration.

Glatz — parasols on a hotel terrace

Glatz — Parasols since 1895. Published wind-resistance classes, long-lived spare parts.

The house

A hundred and thirty years of parasols, and one obsession

Glatz has been making parasols since 1895, in Frauenfeld, Switzerland. It is the European leader in the sector, with more than a hundred and twenty-five years of experience and distribution across the continent.

That age has a very concrete consequence for us: the technical documentation exists, the wind-resistance classes are published, and spare parts stay available for years. On a restaurant terrace, that is what counts.

The ranges

Four families, one level of demand

From the table parasol to the large cantilever, the logic stays the same: a documented structure, replaceable canopies and available parts.

Centre poles

The classic parasol, pole in the middle. The most stable and the cheapest to ballast — so the first reflex on an exposed restaurant terrace.

Cantilevers

The mast steps out of the used area and completely frees the space under the canopy. Superb beside a pool, and demanding in ballast.

Canopies, bases and accessories

Replacement canopies, ballasted bases, covers and ground fixings. It is half the real budget of a parasol fleet, and the half people forget to quote.

Why this brand here

Six criteria, and only one
that really decides

A badly chosen parasol does not wear out: it breaks, all at once, on a squally afternoon. This is what we check before quoting.

  • Wind resistance
The only criterion that decidesEvery model carries a wind class. Under the trade winds, it is the first line of the brief — before the colour, before the size.
  • Ballast
The base makes the parasolA large cantilever demands considerable ballast. That is where budgets slip, and where accidents happen.
  • Canopy
Solution-dyedA solution-dyed canopy holds against ultraviolet. A surface-dyed one turns pink in two seasons.
  • Replaceable canopy
Without changing the frameThe canopy wears out before the mast. Being able to replace it alone doubles the useful life of the investment.
  • Securing
Fast closingA squall arrives in ten minutes. Staff must be able to close and secure without tools, or the parasol is lost.
  • Spare parts
Available over timeA broken rib should not condemn a terrace parasol. That is the advantage of an old, documented house.

Ordering and delivery

Ballast and securing

Two subjects nobody raises at the point of sale, and they decide everything: how much the base weighs, and what happens to the parasol when a system approaches.

Ballast
Calculated from the model and the exposure. We quote it with the parasol, never after
Fixing
Cast-in plate, sleeve or mobile base: three solutions, three budgets, three levels of safety
Hurricane season
Plan where the canopies will be stored before buying, not at the first storm warning
Lead time
6 to 8 weeks from Switzerland, depending on canopy and size
Spare parts
Ribs, cranks and canopies available separately and over the long term
