Designer lighting,
the kind you recognise across a room

There is lighting that lights, and there is the piece that makes the photograph. Martinelli Luce publishes signed fittings, some of them in museums. In a lobby or a stairwell, it is the gesture that sets the level of a place.

Martinelli Luce — Pipistrello

Martinelli Luce — Designer lighting, including Gae Aulenti’s Pipistrello. The statement piece of a lobby.

The house

An Italian publishing house, and pieces that became icons

Martinelli Luce publishes from Lucca, in Tuscany, fittings drawn by named creators. The best known, Gae Aulenti’s Pipistrello, drawn in 1965, is recognised without the brand having to be named.

It is a different buying logic from technical lighting: you are not buying lumens, you are buying a piece. It sits in a precise place, and it carries the rest of the decoration.

The ranges

Three families, one signature

The catalogue mixes historic reissues and contemporary work. The two marry: a Pipistrello on a console and a recent pendant over the table do not contradict each other.

Why this brand here

Five points before
placing a designer piece

A badly placed icon is a waste. This is what we look at with the architect before ordering it.

  • Placement
Decided on the planA designer piece is not rescued on delivery day. Lobby, landing, hall console or table: the choice is made beforehand.
  • Size
Several sizes per modelThe Pipistrello comes in several heights. On a console, an error of size ruins the effect.
  • Voltage
Voltage by islandState the island when ordering. On an edition piece, you do not improvise an adaptor.
  • Light source
LED or standard fittingTo be checked model by model: replacing a bulb on a remote island must stay simple.
  • Salt air
Avoid direct exposureThese pieces are made for interiors. On an open terrace we steer towards a technical fitting.

What we recommend here

The pieces that make sense in a villa of the region or in an establishment — because they are seen, and because they hold.

Ordering and delivery

An edition piece is handled differently

This is not a series fitting. The lead time, the packing and the voltage demand an attention the price justifies.

Lead time
6 to 10 weeks from Italy: an edition piece is made, it is not on a shelf
Packing
Reinforced crate on the large sizes — to be built into the freight calculation
Voltage
Stated when ordering. We never ship an edition piece in the wrong voltage
Bulbs
Order spare bulbs at the same time, especially for the outer islands
Sheets
Technical and photometric sheets available for specification files
